BOSTON -- Patrice Bergeron does not have anything autographed by Bobby Orr.That reality is inconceivable. How does the alternate captain of the Boston Bruins, a player who has won a Stanley Cup, will likely spend his entire career in the organization and ultimately have his No. 37 retired -- and is a huge collector of hockey memorabilia -- not have anything signed by the legendary No. 4? How can this be true?I dont have Bobby yet, Bergeron said. I just dont want a jersey. I want something signed. To commemorate the anniversary of their 50th and 80th rookie seasons, respectively, Orr, 68, and fellow Bruins legend Milt Schmidt, 98, dropped the ceremonial first puck before the teams home opener against the New Jersey Devils Thursday night at TD Garden. Orr, 68, pushed Schmidt in a wheelchair out to center ice as the 17,565 gave both a standing ovation. It was so special to see them, Bergeron said. Bobbys so down to earth, its amazing how he is, how nice of a person he is.As Schmidt and Orr exited toward the Zamboni entrance, Bergeron skated over and shook both their hands. A team photographer stood nearby and took a picture. Now, thats the item Bergeron should get signed for his collection. That would be pretty sick, he said.On this night, it wasnt about Bergerons personalized autograph collection. It was an opportunity to honor two of the greatest players to ever wear the spoked-B.Before the brief pregame ceremony, Orr and Schmidt met with the media. As they entered the room just outside the Bruins dressing room, Schmidt quickly gained control of the crowd.Ladies and gentlemen, you are having the privilege of seeing hockeys greatest, Schmidt said.As Schmidt, a former player, coach and GM for the Bruins, continued to praise Orr, the eight-time Norris Trophy winner reached into his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and handed it to Schmidt as a joke.I would go with you, Milty, being the greatest Bruin ever, Orr said.Schmidt, who still has his finger on the pulse, quickly chimed in: He has to say that because Im sitting right next to him.Former Bruins teammate Derek Sanderson is not shy about sharing a funny anecdote or a serious story about Orr. Unless youve been living under a Zamboni, you know how Orr saved Sandersons life by helping him get clean and sober. That act of kindness and friendship is one major reason Sanderson is alive. Hell tell that story to anyone who will listen. But he really enjoys telling about the good times, too.Earlier in their careers, when they were both single, Orr told Sanderson it would be best if he settled down and got married. ?I said, Nah, its not in my blood. Youll be married before me, Sanderson recalled Thursday afternoon. [Orr] said, No, I wont. So, they made a bet: The guy who stayed single lost and had to pay $1,000. Sanderson lost.I paid it in pennies, Sanderson said with a laugh. He rolled a wheelbarrow full of pennies into the Bruins locker room at the old Boston Garden before a practice and dumped the coins in front of Orr.We ended up with some [$1 bills] because the bank wouldnt let us wipe them out [of pennies], recalled Sanderson.Orr is the reason New England became such a hockey hotbed, beginning in the late 1960s. His on-ice success created a hockey craze, especially around Massachusetts. When I came here in 67, you could have shot a cannon off [in the Garden] and you wouldnt have hurt anybody, Sanderson said. Bobby put all the seats in the building. In 1967, the Bruins would have Mondays off. Orr would gather a few of his teammates, including Sanderson, Gerry Cheevers, Don Awrey and Phil Esposito, and they would board a bus and travel to local communities to play against high school teams. We would switch goalies and have a scrimmage, Sanderson said. It sold out. It was only a buck, so all the parents were there and we played a game for an hour, an hour and 20 minutes. But when you get on the ice with somebody who is a freshman in high school, and youre playing on the same ice as Bobby Orr and Esposito and those guys, they became fans for life. And now theyre grandfathers. There were no cameras. No social media. No one to spoil those types of moments. Orr made it genuine. Even trips to local childrens hospitals. Sanderson would leave those visits depressed, but he said it would rejuvenate Orr because he would promise to score a goal for a sick child.Bobby did all that for free, Sanderson said. Ive never, never seen anyone, anyone do that.Bruins coach Claude Julien easily breaks into a smile at the mere mention of No. 4. Julien is coaching his 10th season with the Bruins, the longest tenured coach in the NHL with one team. He understands the impact Orr has had on this community and organization.Youre a kid and hes your idol and then you turn around and hes your friend, Julien said.Devils forward Taylor Hall, the No. 1 overall pick by the Edmonton Oilers in 2010, is represented by the Orr Hockey Group. He doesnt know Bobby Orr the hockey player, Hall only knows him as a friend and agent. From the time I met him I was 14, it was pretty cool, not only for me, but my family to experience him and to see him and to listen to what he says, Hall said. Hes got great ideas about the game and the way players should play. Hes a great man and a nice guy, but hes going to go to bat for you as an agent. As I grow older and see the impact that hes had on a city like Boston, its pretty cool to say hes one of my friends. The ovation Bobby Orr receives whenever hes in the building is unmatched. Hes a gentleman. Hell do anything for the fans and the Hall of Fame defenseman is truly one of the greatest of all time. When you go someplace with him, youre staying until everybody gets an autograph, Sanderson said.Sounds like Bergeron has a shot. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera on Friday described the possibility that middle linebacker Luke Kuechly has suffered his second career concussion concerning. After expressing his worry over Kuechlys injury, Rivera quickly added, I dont want to get into the speculation of all of that. Im not the expert.Kuechly was placed in the concussion protocol after he was carted off the field late in the fourth quarter Thursday night of a?23-20 win?over the New Orleans Saints. He appeared to take a helmet-to-helmet hit on a tackle of Saints running back?Tim Hightower. He was in tears as he rode off toward the locker room Thursday night while fans screamed Luuuuke! The picture of Kuechly in tears left an impression on many who saw it, including Carolina players.I get that part, Rivera said. Heres a guy thats a warrior. He loves the game, and it was an emotional time for him, an emotional time for his teammates. His teammates know how important it is to him.Rivera would not speculate on how much time Kuechly might miss. The 2013 NFL Defensive Player of the Year missed three games last season with a concussion suffered in the opener at Jacksonville.Kuechly appeared in much better spirits Friday. Outside linebacker Thomas Davis posted a picture of himself with Kuechly holding his thumb up.Kuechly is the sixth Panthers player to be diagnosed with a concussion during the regular season and the seventh since the preseason. That leads the NFL, with the New York Giants and Washington Redskins tied with five each.Left tackle Michael Oher has missed seven straight games with a concussion, and there is no timetable for his return. Quarterback Cam Newton missed one game with a concussion.Saints quarterback Drew Brees had a message for Kuechly as he left the field Thursday.I tried to let him know that I was going to be praying for him, Brees said. He is ... certainly one of the best football players Ive ever seen and played against. And I hope that hes OK.The Panthers will have 10 days before their next game. Its rare for a player to be cleared from the protocol in seven or fewer days, and because Kuechly previously has suffered a concussiion, it could make his recovery longer.ddddddddddddAfter the game, Carolina players obviously were affected by the injury to Kuechly as well as to center Ryan Kalil (shoulder) and defensive end Mario Addison (foot). There was no celebrating in the locker room.We rally behind that guy, Panthers defensive end Charles Johnson said about Kuechly. Hes our leader. When you see a leader go down like that, we just rally behind him. Im keeping Luke in my prayers.Tight end Greg Olsen said the only good thing that came out of the game was the win. He said it was tough seeing the look on Kuechlys face as he was carted off the field.Safety Kurt Coleman was one of several players who mentioned he was praying for Kuechly. It looked like the same exact thing that happened in Jacksonville last year, Coleman said. He was yelling to us to continue to fight. Its remarkable in a sense.Just hoping its precautionary and he will be back sooner rather than later. Thats all I can hope for.Players on offense were impacted as well.Thats our leader, one of the key components of our team, fullback Mike Tolbert said. Its more than that. Hes a brother of ours, so when we see him down, a guy thats as tough as he is and as mighty and strong spirited as he is, to see him in that predicament, it really hits home. The Panthers already were without outside linebacker A.J. Klein, who suffered a concussion last week.Kuechly was one of several key players injured Thursday night, along with Kalil?and Saints running back Mark Ingram (possible concussion) in the third quarter.Kalil had missed two straight games with an injury to his right shoulder. It wasnt immediately clear which shoulder was injured Thursday.Ingram was injured on a 13-yard run when he collided with Coleman?as he went down. Ingram lay on the ground for a few seconds before getting up and walking off slowly. Later, he headed to the locker room to be evaluated for a possible concussion.Information from ESPN staff writer Mike Triplett and The Associated Press was used in this report. ' ' '
