RIO DE JANEIRO - Former Kentucky Wildcat DeMarcus Cousins and former Texas A&M Aggie DeAndre Jordan?hauled in the Olympic gold medal in the championship game of the 2016 Olympics against Serbia. With a gold medal on the line, Cousins saved his best for last for USA Basketball. Coming off the bench for a third straight game, Cousins set the tempo early by dominating the paint, sparking Team USA to a 40-15 first-half run, and ultimately to a 96-66 rout of Serbia.Cousins posted 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for his third double-digit scoring game of the Olympics. He had 11 points and 12 rebounds by halftime. Cousins is also the third former UK player in a row to win a gold medal.?DeAndre Jordan went into the stands at Carioca Arena and collected an American flag, which he initially wrapped himself in like a blanket before holding it high over his head for all to see. After a slow start in Rio, there was no doubt about who was on top, and the Americans beamed as they walked off the floor before the medal ceremony. The 6-foot-11 forward, who was drafted fifth overall in 2010 after a sensational freshman season at Kentucky, averaged 9.1 points and 5.8 rebounds in eight games at the Olympics. He shot 61.4 percent from the floor, only shooting less than 50 percent in one game during the run. Cousins is the 10th Wildcat all-time to compete in the Olympics and win a gold medal (not counting Sam Bowie, who was awarded a medal by President Jimmy Carter after the United States boycotted the 1980 Moscow Games), tied with North Carolina and UCLA for the most among all colleges. Anthony Davis captured the gold at the last Olympics, in 2012, and Tayshaun Prince was a part of the 2008 gold-medal team. Cousins is the second John Calipari player to win a gold medal, joining Davis.Congratulations to USA Basketball on another gold medal and to our own DeMarcus Cousins, Calipari said. DeMarcus continues to get better and better and has become one of the best big men in our game. I know how badly he wanted this opportunity and this gold medal. I couldnt be more proud of him.Though its the first Olympic gold medal of his career, it isnt Cousins first major success story with Team USA. He previously helped USA Basketball to a gold medal at the 2014 FIBA World Cup, averaging 9.6 points and 5.6 rebounds while shooting a team-high 70.2 percent from the field during that nine-game run. Cousins is entering the prime of his NBA career. Just a few months ago he was named to the All-NBA Second Team for a second straight year after averaging career highs in both points per game (26.9) and rebounds per game (10.2). CINCINNATI -- Reds manager Bryan Price thought that Jonathan Lucroy had struck out. Turns out, he was right. And that was just one of many things that went wrong for Cincinnati on an all-around bad night.Lucroys two-run homer started Milwaukees five-run third inning, and the Brewers rolled to a 9-1 victory over the Reds on Saturday night with their best offensive showing in nearly two months. The bottom two teams in the NL Central have split the first two games of their series.Lucroy connected off left-hander John Lamb (1-7) in the third as he continued taking advantage of the last-place Reds. The All-Star catcher is 14 for 31 (.452) against Cincinnati this season, with five of his 12 homers and 15 RBI.First, there was some controversy. Lucroy swung at a two-strike pitch that landed in the dirt, but plate umpire Quinn Wolcott heard a sound and called a foul tip, extending the at-bat. Replays indicated that Lucroy missed the ball, but the tip of his bat hit the plate, causing a sound. Lucroy initially thought his bat hit the ball but later realized hed hit only the plate.Price immediately came out to argue, but got nowhere. It was an honest mistake, Lucroy said. I dont blame (Price). I dont blame him at all. I really thought Id foul-tipped it. He (Wolcott) did, too. Thats one of those crazy things that happen during a game. When Price went out to change pitchers later during the long inning, he got into it again with the umpire, who gave him his third ejection of the season. There was more into it than that, and well leave it at that, Price said. Quinn does a great job. I have no problems with effort. We had a difference of opinion and it got out of hand.Lamb and reliever Keyvius Sampson needed 53 pitches to get through the inning as the Brewers sent 11 batters to the plate and piled up five hits, three walks and five runs for a 9-0 lead. Its frustrating when there are expectations and youre not meeting them. I hope I continue to have the ball every five days.Nelson gave up six hits and a pair of walks in seven shutout innings, emerging from his slump.
