SAN FRANCISCO -- The Philadelphia Phillies placed two-time Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay on the 15-day disabled list Monday because of inflammation in his throwing shoulder. Manager Charlie Manuel said Halladay had travelled to Los Angeles, where he was scheduled to be examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum on Tuesday. "Im sure hell find out his problem tomorrow," said Manuel, noting he appreciated the pitchers will to do his job despite the shoulder injury. "Ive been around the game a long time and I never liked to tell someone I couldnt play. I played with a broken arm, I played with a whole lot of things. I got hit in the face and my lip was over my eye and I missed one day. ... Yeah, I understand that. He felt like he could go out there and still pitch. He wasnt thinking about pitching bad, he wanted to try. Hes an upstanding guy, hes a straight guy. There should be more guys like that." Halladay is 2-4 with an 8.65 ERA in seven starts this season after missing nearly two months last season -- from late May to mid-July -- with a strained right lat muscle. He allowed nine runs in 2 1-3 innings against Miami on Sunday for his second straight loss and second outing in a row of less than four innings -- third in all this year. The 35-year-old right-hander is in the final season of his contract, making $20 million this year. Halladay said Sunday this is a new injury for him, and he started feeling discomfort the morning after an April 24 start against Pittsburgh. He has struggled his two times out since and has given up at least five earned runs in four of his seven outings this season. Halladay was replaced on the roster by left-hander Joe Savery, recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley in time to join the club before the start of a three-game series in San Francisco. "Hes on our team and well use him when we have to," Manuel said. Yet the Phillies hadnt decided how to cover what would have been Halladays next turn to pitch, Friday at Arizona. Manuel didnt speak with Halladay on Sunday night during the teams cross-country trip, saying Halladay was sleeping when the skipper walked back to see him. "I didnt want to wake him up," Manuel said. Manuel is hopeful his club is better equipped to handle the loss of Halladay this season than a year ago, when the team struggled during his absence and wound up missing the playoffs for the first time in six years. "If you look and you see our rotation and you our bullpen, the back end of our bullpen has been pretty consistent," Manuel said. "Weve been inconsistent from the middle until we get to the eighth inning." Custom Cleveland Indians Jerseys . Football Federation Australia chief executive David Gallop says A-League clubs may still find it difficult to sign high-profile international stars even with the new guest-player slot.FFA recently introduced a full-season guest player role tailor-made to help Melbourne City sign Socceroos veteran Tim Cahill. However Gallop warned clubs will still be hard-pressed to lure big, marketable names to Australia as they struggle to balance star power with a desire to win games - all in a salary-cap system. Its always tough, Gallop said on Monday after announcing Hyundais four-year A-League sponsorship extension.Theres a big expectation about big-name stars, but football coaches want to win games so theres always a balance of how they approach that.Weve loosened the rules, if you like, around the full-season guest capacity of clubs in that space. But we dont necessarily think its easy to get big-name players. There are leagues overseas offering a lot of money and we have to be conscious that we operate in largely a salary-cap environment, an environment where private investors are putting their hand in their own pocket. The guest player spot - essentially a third marquee player who meets FFAs key commercial metrics - has increased conjecture CCahill is set to join City as the new face of the A-League.ddddddddddddGallop met with Cahills management the week before last but on Monday said there were no fresh developments, only reiterating Australias all-time leading goalscorer would provide a valuable boost. His comments came as the leagues first and only naming-rights sponsor Hyundai re-committed until the end of the 2019-20 season. The partnership will also extend to a 15th season, expanding to include rights to the Socceroos, Matildas and W-League.The new four-year deal, which Gallop said was worth millions of dollars and represented a significant uplift on the last, does not include incentives for expansion. But he said that did not necessarily rule out more teams before 2019-20.Gallop expected some clubs to take advantage of a change in regulations allowing them to sign with rival car manufacturers in deals upwards of about $500,000.City started the trend by joining forces with Nissan this month.Obviously not everyone will go into that space, he said. But I think we will see the bigger clubs with that kind of sponsorship in upcoming seasons.
