Louis Erard has teamed up with Alain Silberstein once again to create the new grey Smile-Day, using his signature design language of shapes, colours and day-of-the-week emojis.
The colour scheme is the same language used in L e Régulateur Louis Erard x Alain Silberstein x Watches of Switzerland Singapore, using grey as the canvas and a delightful mix of primary colours of red, blue and yellow, marking this watch as a Silberstein creation. The different shapes used for the HMS hands are also a Silberstein design signature.
This new piece also incorporates a day-of-the-week indicator above the date at 6 o’clock, using whimsical emojis designed by Alain. These emojis range from ‘Monday Blues’ to ‘Sunday Sunshine’. But since these emojis are unnamed, the wearer can choose to designate the red smiley emoji as Monday if they wish. The emoji can even be changed based on the mood. All 7 available emojis can be quickly changed with a simple click of the crown.
Overall, this watch follows the design style of earlier Louis Erard x Silberstein collaborations, starting with the Tryptique and most recently the La Semaine of the collection. Like the La Semaine, the Smile-Grey also features HMS’s standard central pivot hand. The case retains the rounded cylinder within the tonneau-shaped frame, and the canvas strap loop, tapered crown, and the Silberstein logo described earlier round out the quirkiness of this watch. But it’s thanks to Alain’s design genius that these seemingly crazy elements come together so perfectly. This watch is very comfortable to wear and looks very beautiful while retaining its playful personality.
The case cylinder is made of micro-blasted grade 2 titanium with a matte finish, which contrasts nicely with the polished titanium used for the tonneau-shaped frame. The movement remains the Sellita SW220-1, which is used in many other Louis Erard pieces, visible through the sapphire caseback.
The 40m case feels very comfortable on the wrist. The grey nylon strap is very flexible and soft, and is fastened with Velcro to make the strap easily adjustable. The strap is equipped with a quick release system.
French interior architect turned watch designer Alain Silberstein is a pioneer who not only plays with form and color, but also has a clear vision for his work that he always sticks to. These values and vision are widely praised, including from MANUEL EMCH:
What may seem whimsical actually has a deep connection to serious art and color theory. This is where the Louis Erard collaboration once again embodies the brand's culture. Through his words, Alain Silberstein explains how the Louis Erard collaboration celebrates the essence of time with a clear, playful yet solid design, where tradition is respected and boundaries are whimsically pushed.
Louis Erard x ALAIN SILBERSTEIN SMILE-DAY The watch features a 40mm openwork round case in micro-blasted grade 2 titanium and polished grade 5 titanium, with arched bars on the sides that extend to the lugs, and SILBERSTEIN’s distinctive signature to bring a smile to your day! SILBERSTEIN has been featuring signature design elements since the 1990s, with the iconic “Smile-Day” aperture at 6 o’clock making every day brighter. The dial features ALAIN’s three Bauhaus-Kandinsky-inspired hands, a mix of primary colors and bold shapes: a red triangle hour indicator, a blue arrow-shaped minute hand, and a yellow wavy second hand. The crown features SILBERSTEIN’s red lacquer. The grey nylon strap and its hook-and-loop fastener system make adjustment simple. The understated cool color is known to connoisseurs as “Stahlgrau”, with the grey color transitioning from shiny on the dial to bright on the strap.
