ELMONT, N.Y. -- Theory made a successful return to the races Saturday, winning the Grade 3, $200,000 Futurity at Belmont Park by 3-1/2 lengths in a performance that could propel him to the Breeders Cup Juvenile in three weeks at Santa Anita.Making his first start since winning his debut at Saratoga on July 30, Theory, the 1-5 favorite, chased the pacesetting Moves Like Ali through a quarter-mile in 22.62 seconds, a half in 45.35, and five-eighths in 57.40 before switching leads and taking over inside the eighth pole.Theory ($2.70) widened his advantage in the final sixteenth while covering six furlongs in 1:09.91. He wasnt done yet, as he galloped out another quarter of a mile under Javier Castellano. He galloped out steady and strong; thats what made me more excited. When you ask him, he responded, Castellano said.Trainer Todd Pletcher said the performance gives him and owners WinStar Farm and the China Horse Club plenty of options for the fall, including the Breeders Cup Juvenile on Nov. 5 at Santa Anita. That would mean stretching out from six furlongs to 1-1/16 miles around two turns. With the way he ran, the way he galloped out, and the way he came back, we have to have that discussion, Pletcher said.Theory was an impressive 5-1/2-length winner at Saratoga on July 30 and was pointing to the Grade 1 Hopeful on Sept 3. In late August, Pletcher wasnt happy with the way Theory was training, and the colt was eventually sent back to WinStar Farm. The horse was evaluated, and the only issue was a foot bruise. He was sent back to Pletcher in about two weeks, and the horse breezed four times leading up to this.In his debut, Theory won on the lead. On Saturday, he showed the ability to stalk, pounce, and finish.Hes a very good-minded horse, hes got a great disposition, hes not headstrong in any way; I anticipated he would rate fine and wasnt surprised that he did, Pletcher said.Star Empire rallied for second in the Futurity, a length ahead of Moves Like Ali. The Walk, who stumbled at the break, and Reckling completed the order of finish.Pletcher said he did not ask Castellano for such a lengthy gallop-out.He actually galloped out further than I probably would have told Javier to gallop out, but he hasnt run in a while, Pletcher said. The way he ran today, the way he finished puts us in a position where weve got a lot of options. If his connections decide to skip the Breeders Cup, Theory could be pointed to the Nashua, a one-turn mile at Aqueduct on Nov. 4, or the Kentucky Jockey Club, a two-turn, 1-1/16-mile race at Churchill Downs on Nov. 26. With the amount of money given to players by their clubs these days, it is a wonder that so many of those teams allow the sport to continue to take away many of their assets so they can play for a different team in the middle of their season. THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff received a small promotion Friday, proclaimed the backup quarterback for the highly anticipated Week 2 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. And yes, that qualifies as news around here.Goff entered the regular season as the Los Angeles Rams third-string quarterback and was inactive in the opener against the San Francisco 49ers, an eventual 28-0 loss on Monday Night Football. But Rams coach Jeff Fisher indicated beforehand that he would look to potentially rotate Goff and Sean Mannion as the backup to Case Keenum for Week 2, the home opener at Los Angeles Coliseum.Hes really excited about it, Fisher said of Goff. Hes ready to play if anything happens. Its exciting for him, just knowing that hes a snap away from going in the game.Fisher is undecided on whether he will continue to alternate Mannion and Goff as his backup in the coming weeks. The Rams moved up 14 spots to take Goff with the first overall pick in the 2016 draft, then watched him struggle through four preseason games, goingg 22-of-49 with four turnovers and 4.dddddddddddd.7 yards per attempt. The 21-year-old took a handful of snaps with the first-team offense during Fridays practice at Cal Lutheran University. Its just prepare the same way every week, Goff said. It can happen any time. Obviously I support Case, but anything can happen.Keenum, undrafted despite a record-breaking collegiate career at Houston, struggled mightily at Levis Stadium on Monday, going 17-for-35 for 130 yards and two interceptions while leading an offense that went 3-for-15 on third downs. Goff watched from the sideline in warm-ups that night and came away thinking the game moves faster in the regular season, but its still football.Fisher has no plans to change his starting quarterback at the moment, so Goff will have to settle for the backup role. Its an improvement nonetheless.Ive been preparing the same way every week, Goff said, like Im going to play.
